DOA: Currently, there are two parts to the ''Endangered Species'' LP with the third about to drop. I recall you speaking on a DNBA Podcast about this being an album full of collaborations. Was this the idea From the outset, or did it kind of just evolve into this collection of collaborations?
BSE: After Driving Insane and C&U we didn抰 want to dive into the chaos of doing a 3rd solo album, because it can drive you insane! But on the other hand we wanted to keep on doing these bigger projects because they are so much fun. That made us decide to make a Compilation album that included both our own music and all the Drum & Bass we like. So it was the idea From the start.
DOA: How did you decide which producers to work with on this album?
BSE: We just approached producers whose work we love, if they were willing to cooperate in creating ''Endangered Species'' and luckily for us (after we had someone sit on them for too long), a lot of people were.
DOA: What can we expect From the CD version of the album?
BSE: We like to create an album for everybody that likes the music and not just for the DJs, that抯 why we release a double CD (just like the first two albums). One CD is a compilation of the entire series (for people that might DJ with CDs or people that like intros and outros) and the other CD will have a mix containing tracks that are all related to us or our labels (past and future releases).
DOA: Once the Endangered Species project is wrapped up, what is going to be next for you guys as producers? Also, what抯 set up to drop on your labels, Black Sun Empire and oBSEssions?
BSE: We抮e planning to do a few 12's and take it From there, besides that we抣l start a new adventure called: ''how can I adjust the tempo in Cubase?'' but you抣l find out about all that later ![]()
BSE Recordings: Telemetrik (Marcio From Corrupt Souls) My Lightyear (album)
Obsessions:
009: Cooh Armeny / BSE Monologue (October)
010: Trei Day Away / BSE & D.kay Bullet in the Head (TBC)
DOA: In reference to your labels, I heard something to the affect of BSE doing record sales numbers that stand up with DnB staples like Metalheadz, RAM, Full Cycle and other established outfits, yet you guys rarely get the props you deserve. Why do you think that is the case?
BSE: I think we produce and release a sound that is not the most popular in the UK, but gets a lot of respect outside of England. So you might not hear a lot of English DJs play it in clubs or on BBC Radio and you might not see a lot of English magazines write about it, but the rest of the world seems to love it.
DOA: BSE is arguably one of the premier DnB outfits to come From the Netherlands; how does the scene in the NL compare to other places you have been?
BSE: There is a lot of great DnB From Holland these days and at the same time it抯 a Dutch thing too be modest about it, but we can抰 complain and party wise it's real healthy too: not to big not to small. So if we compare it to the rest of the world? It's hard to say, but I guess we definitely have the best Chocomel.
DOA: With more producers coming From your neck of the woods, do you think NL can rival some of the other countries around the world in terms of output? Who should we be looking out for From there?
BSE: YES! BRING IT ON! Besides Noisia, Limewax, Icicle, Martyn, Eye-D & Hidden, there are people like Spinor, Eskalation & Lenzman Coming up!
DOA: Your MySpace page had record of BSE DJing all over the world for the major part of the summer of 2007. Which night was the craziest?
BSE: Driving around in a tour bus with The Upbeats and Concord Dawn in New Zealand created a lot of hilarious moments and that made a nervous turtle on a pound of WIBES go crazy like a gazelle in trouble.
DOA: Speaking of BSE in the club, what's going on with BLACKOUT? Who will be stopping by in the future?
BSE: Blackout has been going strong for 5 years now and we decided it was time to start using an extra club for smaller editions that would allow us to book upcoming artists who might not fill the big club yet, but who are the sound of the future. So we just had Klute and Jade in the new venue, which was great! Next up are Bad Company UK, Vicious Circle & Noisia on the 5th of October and TC, Teebee and The Upbeats (TBC) on the 7th of December in the bigger venue.
DOA: With so many producers in the scene, who do you guys think will be the ''next big thing''?
BSE: Not sure if they will be the next new ''commercial big thing'', but a big thing for me will be: Telemetrik & Audio. They both are doing solo albums and I think they will be BIG!
DOA: One thing I noticed about BSE is that you抳e been selling your music through sites like Beatport and iTunes. Seeing as though you抳e gotten your feet wet with the legal MP3 sales, do you have any words of advice for labels who might be trying to go digital?
BSE: We believe in evolution and even though vinyl is beautiful, there are new ways of storing music. And yes change can be hard but we need it. So we say go for it!! And what we do is we let our vinyl distributor also take care of our digital distribution, so we don抰 have to take care of all the individual online shops ourselves and that way we both stay in bizzz!
